Roman Catholic A very well known and popular place to go on retreat. Ampleforth is situated north of the historic city of York and just below the rolling North Yorkshire Moors. Ampleforth Abbey dates from 1925 and is home to a monastic community whose life of prayer is central to the many activities going on in this busy place. Guests are welcome for private retreats, but there is also a lively programme of retreats and workshops led by members of the community. As well as the more traditional Christian retreats, you can turn your hand to woodworking or candle making, or find out about wine tasting the Biblical way! Here is just one example of a retreat available on the Ampleforth programmes: Pilgrimage of Faith- Spiritual Walks. On this retreat you have time and quiet for reflection and exercise, a chance to share in the monastic prayer of the community, and walks to beautiful places in fellowship with other pilgrims on the spiritual path. The daily schedule looks like this: Late Monday arrival with tea and then Vespers, followed by the next three days of walks, and depart on the Friday after breakfast. The cost of such a retreat is about £150 for residential and £80 non-residential. Accommodation at Ampleforth is wide-ranging and very comfortable: The Archway, The Park, The Guesthouse and The Grange all offer something a bit different. This is a big, rambling and beautiful place with grounds that extend as far as the eye can see over some two and a half thousand acres. Ampleforth School adds to the liveliness of the place, but it is surprisingly peaceful and quiet.
