Buddhist Manjushri KMC is located at Conishead Priory near Ulverston; south of the English Lake District and just a short woodland stroll from the western shore of Morecambe Bay. The Priory is a listed Romantic-gothic mansion, and in the former kitchen garden of the estate the Buddhist Centre has constructed a stunning ‘Kadampa World Peace’ Temple. The Temple is richly decorated both inside and out. Inside, a display case takes up most of the West wall and contains many fine representations of the Buddha, including an 8-foot bronze statue cast in Britain. The Temple normally seats up to 750 people, and is extended to seat over 2,000 participants during two annual Buddhist Festivals. It has been blessed by the many teachings and meditations that have taken place there, and is a place of great tranquillity. Manjushri KMC has a resident community of about 100 people, both lay and ordained Buddhists. Throughout the year, residents and local non-residents follow three structured programmes of Buddhist study and retreat at different levels, and there is a year-round programme of residential weekend courses and retreats for visitors. The Resident Teacher of Manjushri KMC is Gen la Kelsang Khyenrab, an English monk of great experience. The study and retreat programmes at the Centre were designed by the Spiritual Director of the Centre, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, a fully accomplished meditation master and internationally-renowned Buddhist teacher and author. Geshe Kelsang has been based at Manjushri KMC since 1977, and has worked tirelessly to promote Kadampa Buddhism, founding a worldwide association of Buddhist Centres called the ‘New Kadampa Tradition - International Kadampa Buddhist Union’. One guest of Manjushri KMC had this to say of his experience there [in 2007]: Facilities: Disabled access to Temple and ground floor, car parking, shop and mediation rooms
