Anglican St Michael's Convent where the Community of the Sisters of the Church live is a smart place on Ham Common in Richmond, with the park near by for walks and a large garden in which to sit. Founded in 1870, the Community of the Sisters of the Church is an international body of women within the Anglican Communion. Here the sisters are committed to a life of prayer and worship, community service, and their outreach work includes hospitality, informal education, and leading retreats and workshops at which they have earned a deserved reputation. The Community has a special interest in the idea of prayer and the clown, running clown workshops as part of its extensive and interesting retreat and workshop programme. It may also include circle dancing, Enneagram work, Taize and Iona music, prayer through dance, Myers-Briggs work, and a look at Mary of Nazareth as a model for contemporary women and men. There are opportunities for women 18-30 to live with the community and experience a life of prayer and fellowship. Open: Almost all year, closed early Jan/ early August. Receives men, women, young people, and groups. Rooms: 11 singles, 3 doubles. Facilities: Conferences, garden, library, guest lounge, outgoing calls guest phone only. This is not a B&B place. Spiritual Help: Personal talks, spiritual direction, personal retreat direction. All by prior arrangement. Eucharist most days. Guests Admitted to: Chapel. All other areas except Sister’s private quarters. Help in the garden usually welcomed. Meals: Everyone eats together, mainly in silence. Traditional/ whole food. Vegetarian, vegan and special diets. DIY facilities. Special Activities: Planned programme of events. Send for brochure. Situation: Quiet, but only 8 miles from Heathrow. Situated in a suburban area near Richmond Park, with access to the Thames. Maximum Stay: 1 week or by arrangement. Bookings: Letter or telephone. Charges: Suggested donation £30 per day including meals/ £8 for quiet day with one meal. Conference area £70 per day & smaller room £5 per bed per day. Access: By rail, bus or car - all easy. |
