The Good Retreat Guide team found Whalley Abbey to be a very comfortable and gracefully furnished house within the historic ruins of an ancient Cistercian abbey. Whalley Abbey was once the ecclesiastical power-centre for northern England, but like so many others was destroyed during the Reformation. An elegant manor house was built in the 16th Century and and it is this building that is used today for retreats and conferences. The accommodation has recently been refurbished with a selection of rooms - many of which have wonderful views over the ruins and gardens. Meals, which are delicious, are served in a Jacobean-style dining room with all the refinements of a first-class restaurant. Whalley Abbey offers a warm and gentle Christian hospitality that is conducive to deep rest and relaxation. You will be very well looked after!
